In fact, my contribution started with the very first MVP in 2021. Back then, we were working on the New Layer project and thinking about the metaverse. At some point it became clear that the key question wasn't the virtual space, but the content. If we want a digital world, users need an easy way to bring real-world objects into it. I suggested building a mobile 3D scanner that would become that tool. That's how the first MagiScan prototype appeared. I wrote the mobile app and the images-to-3D processing server. At the time, the server was running on my laptop. It was an experiment: could we remove complex software, GPU workstations, and professional cameras, and leave only a smartphone? The technology worked. But the main issue turned out not to be the algorithms, but the user experience. Making 360 scanning intuitive How will a person know that they really captured the object from all sides? How do we make 360 scanning intuitive? We implemented logic based on the smartphone's compass. The user literally fills a circle by walking around the object. It's a simple mechanic, but it solves the fundamental task of coverage control. The most honest test happened at home. My daughter was 6 then. She saw me scanning an object and asked to try. Without instructions, she started walking around the item, filling the circle segments. A few minutes later, the model was ready. If a child understands the mechanic without explanations, it means the interface truly works. My role today Today, my role in the project is broader. I design the architecture of the mobile app, am responsible for capture logic, operating modes (LiDAR, Hybrid, Manual), and input data quality control. I take part in designing the backend pipeline: task queues, processing runners, wait time control, and system scaling. I research and test new 3D reconstruction technologies: NeRF, Gaussian Splatting, and other methods. My task is not only to implement a new technology, but to understand how it affects stability, predictability, and user value. A system approach MagiScan's strength, in my view, is its system approach. We're not making an algorithm demo. We're building a working tool. You can create a 3D model in many ways. It's harder to do it: fast stable without complex training with a predictable result MagiScan lowers the entry barrier to 3D. A smartphone becomes a tool for digitizing reality. I see the project's value in the fact that 3D becomes as familiar a format as photography. A photo captures an image. 3D captures shape, geometry, volume. For me, MagiScan is a bridge between the physical and the digital world. The simpler this transition is, the more people will be able to create, prototype, and monetize their ideas. That's what I consider the main contribution: making complex technology clear and accessible. Two roles - one shared mission My role in the project combines two areas of responsibility. As Head of QA, I'm responsible for product quality at every stage of development: from early ideas and prototypes to release and support. I build the testing approach, monitor stability, analyze where users face difficulties, and help the team find solutions before a problem becomes visible to the audience. As CPO, I keep focus on product development. I work with feedback, help shape priorities, plan improvements, and connect user expectations with what we're building in development. Why we do this The main goal I see in this project is simple yet very ambitious: to make AR an understandable and useful part of everyday life. Some scan objects and 3D-print them. Some restore damaged items: they make a scan, refine the model in an editor, and print either a completely new object or just the part they need. API and infrastructure: We've built a flexible API capable of processing massive volumes of data. It's the "nervous system" of the project, connecting the user's mobile device with cloud computing power for rendering the most complex 3D models. Metrics and analytics: We don't guess - we know. From the very beginning, my main focus has been building the scanning system that turns an ordinary smartphone into a tool for creating high-quality 3D models. Today, MagiScan is a product used by thousands of people, and behind it stands a tremendous team effort. In mobile development, we work as a duo, though the entire project involves seven people. Each of us is responsible for our part of the system, but together we're building a unified tool that must be intuitive for the user while being powerful enough to handle complex tasks. Scanning technologies About 90% of my work is tied to scanning technologies. This means working with camera, depth data, spatial data, and geometry reconstruction. I focus on ensuring the app can correctly capture data, process it, and turn it into a full 3D model. One of the key challenges has been developing scanning modes. For devices with LiDAR, we implemented a hybrid mode that combines camera and depth data. This helps produce more stable and accurate scans faster. For devices without LiDAR, we developed a semi-spherical scanning mode based on ARKit. In this mode, the app guides the user to properly walk around the object and capture enough photos to build a quality 3D model using photogrammetry. Spatial data and photogrammetry A separate direction of my work has been spatial data processing. I've worked on building point clouds, geometry reconstruction, and plane detection. These tasks require careful handling of camera data and algorithm optimization, since everything runs on a mobile device with limited resources. Another important part of the system is photogrammetry. I've participated in developing the runner service responsible for image processing and 3D model construction. We've made it faster and more stable, and added automatic cache cleanup so the system runs reliably even with a large volume of scans. Tech stack and vision We use Apple's ecosystem technologies: Swift, ARKit, RealityKit, AVFoundation, and PhotogrammetrySession. These tools enable efficient work with camera and 3D data directly on mobile devices. For me, working on MagiScan means the opportunity to develop technologies that are gradually becoming part of everyday life. When a phone can quickly turn a real object into a digital 3D model, entirely new use cases emerge: from creativity and 3D printing to e-commerce and AR apps. I'm confident that in the coming years, 3D scanning technologies will become far more accessible. Description of Services AR Generation provides MagiScan, a 3D scanner app and a 3D/AR viewer for ecommerce store websites. MagiScan also allows ecommerce businesses to create 3D models of their products and display them in 3D or AR on their website. Customers pay for each scan made with the MagiScan app and also for each view made by their website visitors. 2. Payment Before using MagiScan, the Customer must choose one of the tariffs available in the app or on the Shopify App Store and pre-pay for it. MagiScan is sold on a subscription basis and is payable in advance. The Customer agrees to pay the full amount for each tariff chosen, which includes the cost of all scans. 3. Term This Agreement is valid for 12 months from the date of payment, and may be renewed earlier or at any time when the Customer runs out of pre-paid scans. The Customer will be notified by the Provider of the renewal date and will have the option to cancel the subscription. 4. Ownership The 3D models generated by users through the MagiScan app remain the property of the respective users. However, MagiScan reserves the right to use these 3D models at its discretion, including, but not limited to, incorporating them into machine learning training and generative AI processes for the development of products. MagiScan may choose to commercialize these products through various channels, including the ability to sell the 3D models separately or as part of a larger dataset to third parties. This may occur through marketplaces or direct transactions. MagiScan is not obligated to make royalty payments or any other form of compensation to users related to the sale of 3D models created by them. 5. Warranties and Representations The Provider warrants that the MagiScan app is of good quality and conforms to the description provided on App Store, Play Market and Shopify App Store. 6. Liability The Provider shall not be liable to the Customer for any indirect or consequential loss or damage arising from the use of the MagiScan app. The Provider's maximum liability to the Customer under this Agreement shall not exceed the amount paid by the Customer for the MagiScan app. 7. General This Agreement constitutes the entire agreement between the parties and supersedes all prior negotiations, understandings and agreements. This Agreement may not be amended except in writing and signed by both parties. 8. Governing Law This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the jurisdiction in which the Provider is located.
